Tweets of the Week: 4/7/10

In NYC, it feels like we skipped spring and went directly into summer. It is that hot. Anyways here are my tweets of the week.

Getting Into Grad School Made Tougher by Recession http://bit.ly/bezrbA | Growing # of applications force more colleges to reject students & Applications to Elite Universities Rise http://nyti.ms/ag6vt9 | Unfortunate but this is no surprise. Everything (schools, jobs, health care, etc) seems more competitive nowadays.

More Job Seekers Opting For Cosmetic Procedures http://bit.ly/9Lz5y6 | What a horrible precedent for future generations we are setting | Am I the only one horrified by this?

‘Undercover Boss’: Exposing the Most Clueless CEOs http://bit.ly/bacmZP | I love the show but I know it is just another form of advertising. I also don’t think these CEOs are as clueless as the article implies and they are only playing the part to get bigger ratings.

No Reply to Your Resume? Here’s Why http://bit.ly/dxnaSy | There is not much to say but getting no contact is worse that getting rejected.

Tweets of the Week: 3/31/10

Back on track. Here are my Tweets of the Week.

Uproar Over School Cafeteria That Doubled as a Nightclub http://nyti.ms/aY8bIk | It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that nightclub plus school (kindergarten to 8th grade) equals disaster. Imagine if one night it was double booked…

More workers are choosing fear over flex time, experts say http://bit.ly/98JBQh & Overqualified? Yes, but Happy to Have a Job http://nyti.ms/aKRIsh | This is sad trend and it looks like fear and uncertainty is going to stay with us for awhile.

7 Crazy Ways People Quit Their Jobs http://bit.ly/cgroCv | I wouldn’t categorizes some of the entries as “Totally Awesome” as several of them are quite tragic. Crazy is a more appropriate title but it was still an interesting read.

I’m Just A F@cking Bill http://bit.ly/dewQNG | I just love Schoolhouse Rock and this is going be a classic. Jimmy Fallon is quickly becoming my favorite late night comedian.

12 Indirect Job Interview Questions & What They Really Reveal http://bit.ly/cCkZic | Always good to know.

Tweets of the Week: 3/17/10

My office is near the St. Patrick’s Day parade (in NYC) so I’m not in a good mood but here are your Tweets of the Week.

This is how you teach WWII to kids these days http://bit.ly/cb9rO7 | I thought this was brilliant and I personally learned a thing or two about WWII. For example I didn’t know Haiti was involved (I got to look that up when I get the time). I wished my history teachers were as creative as college humor. I aced history but not my friends (who are usually dead asleep in that class).

In Hard Times, Lured Into Trade School and Debt http://nyti.ms/a7tGIR | This is unfortunate but people have to understand there are no shortcuts in life. I am always suspicious about for profit schools and you really have to do the research before you commit.

8 Outrageous Frauds involving online degrees http://bit.ly/9H9Sa5 | While you are at it, watch out for these too.

15 Noteworthy Websites That Changed the Internet http://bit.ly/98ZItl | I have used all these sites at one point or another. Right now, I don’t know what I would do without wikipedia, twitter and google.

Student Suspended Even After She Said No to Drugs http://bit.ly/bVMETt | This is when zero tolerance goes horribly wrong. Screwed if you do and screwed if you don’t.

Why do the Dept of Education Need 27 Short-Barreled Shotguns? http://bit.ly/aLya4t | Offered without comment.

Tweets of the Week: 3/10/10

Twitter’s best. The Tweets of the Week.

Many Nations Passing U.S. in Education, Expert Says http://nyti.ms/bxWIZG | This is definitely not a surprise. To think our education system was once something to be proud of.

How Job Seekers Are Using Social Media For Real Results: http://bit.ly/cHEhSm | I was always a big proponent for social media. With a weak job job market, social media could be the edge you are looking for.

Kindergarten student suspended for making gun with fingers http://bit.ly/c0afLk | I read some dumb like this every week. If you can’t make a gun with your fingers, how are you supposed to play cops and robbers?

3 LA teachers removed over choice of black heroes http://bit.ly/dqpmJR | OJ Simpson Really? | I agree with the NAACP that this couldn’t be a mistake and it is a clear mockery of Black History Month.

Five Major Reasons the Economy is Screwed http://bit.ly/9QiSek | This is as clear and easy to read article on the problems with the economy as any.

Tweets of the Week: 3/3/10

I am going to change things up a bit and have only positive stories this week.

Twitter Helps Find Missing Family Member After Chile Earthquake http://bit.ly/dfWgPC & http://bit.ly/ckQwmH | This is great heart- warming story on the power of social networking. It makes a small world smaller.

What if High School Ended After 11th (or Even 10th) Grade? http://nyti.ms/b0vFFT | I am sure my brother would support this (he is a junior currently) and he feels that senior year is a complete waste of time. The idea makes a lot of sense. Students should be judged by the competency of the material rather than how much class time they accumulate.

States may ban credit checks on job applicants http://bit.ly/cJy5Du | I always thought this practice was creepy and a complete invasion of our privacy. If I got this right, the poor would always have trouble finding work if this practice was more common. These companies have no good reason to do so and holding their credit history against them is just wrong. Lucky all the great companies I worked for never would do such a thing. I know I would be turned off if they asked to run a credit check.

Social Networks Play a Major Part in How We Get News http://bit.ly/9jrE81 | This is 100% true for me. I haven’t got a newspaper in years since I just log on to twitter as soon as a I get up to get my news.

45 Creative Resumes to Seize Attention http://bit.ly/b9s4t0 #careers | Some of these resumes are pretty awesome and I am brainstorming right now on how to make my resume on par with these.

Tweets of the Week: 2/24/10

It is hump day aka Wednesday which means the Tweets of the Week.

Using Facebook or Twitter could raise your insurance premiums http://bit.ly/bATWkU | I like to think that people aren’t that dumb on social networks and I believe it is really insurance companies squeezing to get every dollar. I read a good article which I can’t find now that compares these overblown stories with the stories in the 80′s about people with answering machines that have the typical we are not home right now message are more susceptible to being robbed.

Teacher asks students to masturbate http://bit.ly/culOn7 | Offered without comment.

FBI Queries Webcam Use by Schools http://nyti.ms/a7ibSF & Pa. school official defended in webcam spy case http://bit.ly/cBFYCk | I was shocked when this story first came out and it is very scary that our own webcams can be used against us. It doesn’t help that I recently watched a Criminals Minds episode in which a serial killer picks and watches his victims through webcams in a similar fashion. The school is in full blown damage control right now.

Teacher Emphasizes Old-Fashioned Etiquette http://bit.ly/9jAalI | Old-Fashioned Etiquette is not dead!

How Google & Facebook Violate Your Privacy http://bit.ly/9q2oGo | With CCTV, the webcams story, social networks, etc, our privacy is eroding away…

Tweets of the Week: 2/17/10

No blizzard this week so my Tweets of the Week is right on time.

Do School Libraries Need Books?: http://nyti.ms/bPklVm | I personally don’t think libraries need books or least as much as in the past. For example, encyclopedias in the book format are practically obsolete. The information found there is usually brief and outdated and it sucks that you couldn’t borrow it. It is much easier and quicker just to Google or wiki something. I know the books in my university have been practically untouched for years and finding the right book for a research paper is like finding a needle in a haystack.

Teachers Pass Out Treats In Pill Bottle to Calm Test Anxiety: http://bit.ly/b5zrJD | *Facepalm* I can understand where the teachers are coming from but still…

Florida schools giving away $350,000 worth of IPods — using Stimulus Money http://bit.ly/bruxTO | Another facepalm. I like how this story came out right about the time the story about stimulus money running out and schools having problems balancing budgets came out.

The $555,000 Student-Loan Burden http://bit.ly/bd8Aqh | Stories like this make student loans reform a no- brainer. Too bad the government can’t get anything done these days.

Tweets of the Week: 2/11/10

A day late but not a dollar short (ok that didn’t make any sense). Anyways presenting your tweets of week.

Obama report: 95,000 jobs to come each month http://bit.ly/baYs2R & More NYC high school students taking, passing advanced college exams http://bit.ly/cqTWcY | Finally some good news.

Rich Students Will Get More College Acceptance Letters in 2010 http://bit.ly/b6bgbA | This is no surprise as unfortunately the haves will always have a head ups on the have nots especially in times like these.

Lobbying Imperils Overhaul of Student Loans http://nyti.ms/dyUIad | Nothing ever gets done in the government any more…

With Federal Stimulus Money Gone, Many Schools Face Budget Gaps http://nyti.ms/cnwamX | I am afraid when all the stimulus money start disappearing (and not just in education) and the economy would take another dip.

You really can be bored to death, scientists discover http://bit.ly/aHZxhx | Just confirmed my suspicions. Lucky for me there is never a dull moment in my life. Well maybe physic class back in HS…

Tweets of the Week: 2/3/2010

I have talked the talk about improving the education system and now I will try to walk the walk. I will put my name in the alumni organization elections in my old high school and if I help just a little it would be a success. Anyways here are my tweets of the week.

Millionaire teacher collects $100,000 salary and hasn’t teach since 2001 http://bit.ly/danJNS | This is a prime example of why the education system is failing and why so much money goes to waste. It is easy to say the the education system needs to be rebuilt top down but I understand it is an almost an impossible undertaking but reading stories like this time after time is just ridiculous.

Type-A-Plus Students Chafe at Grade Deflation http://bit.ly/aarokO | Although I understand grade inflation is a problem, grade deflation is not the solution. Even though comparing students GPAs from two different schools is like comparing apples to oranges, most still compares them apples to apples. Thus student from schools with grade deflation policies is at a serious disadvantage. This brings up a similar problem where too many (job recruiters/ college admission officers) rely on stats too much to sift through applicants, making it almost necessary to manipulate/ inflate stats to make the cut.

America’s Biggest Rip-offs http://bit.ly/afuSdf | Where do college textbooks rank? | I away said college textbooks were a rip off and lucky for me in my college my professors don’t believe in them, saving me a lot of money. I hope with the emerging ebook market that the price of textbooks would drop for the of future college students.

School Outlaws “Sexual Bending” & Dancing on one foot?? Videotapes dance to enforce rules… http://bit.ly/aSSjcc | A prime example of good intentions, bad policies especially the video taping part.

Tweets of the Week: 1/27/10

Twittering the night away, here are your Tweets of the Week.

25 Clever Exam Answers http://bit.ly/dhGeUL | Children are often smarter than we think they are. I have a friend who is a second grade teacher and he once got a Happy Now Year card from a student. Of course there is no school on New Years’ and a New Years’ card won’t make that much sense in Jan. 4 but a Happy Now Year certainly does. Brilliant!

Completely changing the mood, Haunting read | Apparent suicide of 9-year-old boy raises questions http://bit.ly/b8Gnwz | Tragic. It is hard to fathom that a child that young can be depressed and think about suicide.

Employer told not to post advert for ‘reliable’ workers because it discriminates against ‘unreliable’ applicants http://bit.ly/b0SKMU & School District Seeking to Ban Dictionaries Containing Definitions for Sexual Terms http://bit.ly/5JDBky| This is ridiculous. We live in a world that tries to be so politically correct that it is now a joke.

Simple Passwords Remain Popular, Despite Risk of Hacking http://bit.ly/5yl8S7 | I actually know someone who uses ‘password’ as their password but in his mind, because it is so obvious people will overlook it. Well, ‘password’ is the fourth most popular password…
